Exclusive 1d’s tour chef reveals how she keeps the lads fuelled up

They are multi-million pound pop stars with the world at their feet and staff to cater for their every whim.

But forget about haute cuisine and exotic treats – One Direction prefer simple nosh like pasta, sausage and mash, cakes and biscuits. And never mind late-night meals at swanky restaurants. These down-to-earth lads normally have dinner at a very un-rock ‘n’ roll time of 5.50pm.

The five-piece’s food preferences are revealed in a chat with their tour chef Sarah Nicholas.

She says she sets up the same blue-and-white spotted tablecloth and napkins in every city so the boys feel at home.

She even has a dedicated suitcase with their must-have favourites – Branston pickle, Ambrosia custard and Yorkshire tea bags.

Sheffield born Sarah who reveals that Harry Styles, 19, and Liam Payne, 19, are the most health-conscious, while Louis Tomlinson, 21, loves filling up on sweet puddings.

Niall Horan, 19, and Zayn Malik, 20, prefer the simpler things in life and opt for plain sausage and mash and spag bol.

Protein

The lads are currently on a 10-month tour which means Sarah, 51, and her team are feeding a 100-strong crew every night.

The chef says: “Our evening meal starts at about 5.30pm and usually the boys come in to eat pretty early.

“Harry and Liam are much more conscious of having vegetables, high-protein and very low fat. They watch their food.

“They’ll have vegetables or fish dishes, and anything with noodles.

“Harry likes his Asian food and fish. He’s quite an adventurous eater.

“Liam likes his bacon, steak and vegetables, while Louis eats anything – but a bowl of Special K is his favourite.

“Zayn is very easy to please. He just likes a pasta with bolognese, or spicy chicken. He is not a foodie and eats whatever’s going. Niall likes more simple food, like sausage and mash, pies, creamy chicken pasta or chicken Kiev.

“Each of them have got their own individual taste, and it depends on what mood they are in.

“But we always make sure we’ve got vegetables and there is always a juicer out.”
The Live While We’re Young stars are also partial to sweet things – and that love cake so much that they had a food fight with it on stage recently.

“They’ve all got a sweet tooth,” says Sarah. “So we’ve always got plenty of homemade cakes and biscuits going around.

“And Ambrosia custard is a big favourite.”

Rather than magnums of champagne or bottle of Jack Daniels, 1D’s tipple of choice is a simple cuppa or juice.

Sarah, who is on her second tour with the band, says: “We don’t supply any alcohol.

“But Yorkshire teabags are a must. Louis is the main tea drinker – he’s from Doncaster, so he loves Yorkshire tea the most.

“They also drink more juices and water than fizzy drinks. Before they go on stage, they tend to have orange or apple juice, Capri-Suns or Rubicons.”

But don’t worry about the calories wrecking the boys’ buff physiques – because they exercise to keep in shape.

“They have a choice of healthy food instead of just grabbing KFC,” explains Sarah.

“And they are working hard. They work through the show all the time and they have a personal trainer on the road so they’re burning up calories.

“They’re very aware of what to eat and their trainer helps them out.”
